DescriptionThe islands are near the Canadian province of Newfoundland. It is thought that they were visited by Native people but that there were no permanent settlements. It was taken by Britain during the Seven Years War but given back to the French. The islands changed hands several times in the Napoleonic period, finally ending up again with France. It was siezed from the Vichy government by the Free French army.
