DescriptionThe coins bearing the words “East Africa” were made for the region that eventually became the Republic of Kenya. British adventurers came to the refion in the 1880s. A British East Africa Company was chartered in 1888, after which an administration was set up. The venture was not profitable, and the British government bought out the company and established an East Africa Protectorate. Coins were initially issued for both “East Africa” and Uganda.” The part that became Kenya was made the “Dominion of Kenya” in 1920. Various changes ensued until independence in 1963.It has been habitual, on the collecting side of numismatics, for “Africa” to exclude the Mediterranean coastal states, which are typically lumped in with the other Arab states in the category “Middle East.” Generally speaking, there was a colonial period and an independent period.
